Auto Insurance Companies Againts Horsepower
Automobile insurance companies are on the war against high speed and big horsepower. The automobile companies have always relied on the image of speed and power to sale their vehicles. Now they are in a fight against the insurance industry to continue the trend of more, more, more!
The automobile companies are not helped much by the consumer. The average driver is stepping up their travel times by stepping on the gas. The complaint is that all of this speed is causing the insurance prices to rise. The insurance industry is blaming the rising costs on the losses caused by the speed and power of vehicles.
The problem has only been exacerbated by the government. The removal of the 55 speed limit has gradually given drivers the freedom to slowly raise the speed that they will drive even higher. It is not unusual to find people going 10 or 15 miles per hour over the speed limit regardless if that speed limit is 55 or 75.
Speeding is against the law. So the problem isn’t with the manufacturers or the cars, but with the drivers. Insurance companies should be putting pressure and resources towards slowing drivers down instead of pushing automakers to make vehicles that consumers don’t want to purchase.
Studies have shown that aggressively enforcing existing traffic laws will cut speeding dramatically. Cutting speeding is the number one thing that the insurance companies say will reduce the losses. By using what is already in place everyone can still be happy (except for the speeders maybe).
